Frequently Asked Questions
Here is some information for the most common questions received about henna and herbal hair color. If you have general questions please send them my way and I will add the answer to the FAQ. Personalized questions require a consultation.

Can I buy BotaniHue color if I'm not a hairstylist?
At this time, BotaniHue Professional Color is available exclusively to licensed professionals and certified BotaniHue Salon Partners.
Unlike conventional chemical hair color, botanical hair color works in partnership with your hair's natural characteristics. The final result is influenced by factors such as your existing color, percentage of gray hair, previous chemical services, hair porosity, mineral buildup, and the specific blend of botanical ingredients used. Because every head of hair is unique, there is no universal formula that guarantees the exact same result for everyone.
Professional botanical color is formulated after a personalized consultation and often requires thoughtful adjustments based on the hair's response. Unlike chemical dyes that rely on standardized developer strengths and shade numbering, botanical color is a process of observation, formulation, and refinement. In many cases, the color continues to naturally oxidize and deepen over the first 48 hours, making follow-up evaluation an important part of achieving the best long-term result.
For this reason, we strongly encourage new clients to visit a BotaniHue Salon Partner whenever possible. Certified BotaniHue professionals have been trained in the BotaniHue Method™ and understand how to assess your hair, customize your botanical formula, and make adjustments to achieve your desired results safely and consistently.
For those who do not have a BotaniHue Salon Partner nearby, we offer a guided at-home program to help clients learn botanical hair color the right way. Our goal is to ensure every person using BotaniHue has the knowledge and support needed to achieve beautiful, predictable results.
What is henna?
Henna is a 100% natural dye derived from the henna plant.
The Process: The plant's leaves are dried, crushed, and sifted into a fine powder.
The Paste: Mixed with warm water, the powder becomes a rich paste.
The Result: It releases a reddish-orange dye that beautifully stains proteins like skin, hair, and nails.
What is the difference between henna and botanical (herbal) dyes?
Although the term "henna" is commonly used to describe all herbal dyes, there is a distinct difference:
-
Henna is a specific, single plant.
-
Herbal Dyes are plant-based blends that may or may not contain henna. For instance, "blonde henna" is actually a henna-free herbal blend.
Is herbal color safe for everyone?
Our botanical hair dyes are 100% natural, but plant sensitivities can still happen! It is also important to note that henna has one specific contraindication: it should not be used by anyone with the inherited blood condition G6PD without consulting a physician first.
Will BotaniHue Botanicals cover gray hair?
Our botanical dyes are designed to beautifully blend and camouflage grays rather than paint over them with a flat, opaque color. Here is what you can expect when coloring gray hair with herbs:
-
Natural Highlights: Grays and white hairs will dye a shade lighter than your naturally pigmented hair, creating a stunning, dimensional highlight effect.
-
A Seamless Grow-Out: Because the herbal color blends with your natural hair, your grow-out will look incredibly natural, completely eliminating that stark line of demarcation at the root.
Is henna safe for color-treated or chemically processed hair?
Whether used during an in-person service or purchased directly from our website, our 100% natural pre-mixed colors can be safely applied to hair that has been previously dyed, relaxed, bleached, or chemically processed.
Herbal vs. Chemical Dyes: What’s the difference?
Botanical color is a completely different experience! Unlike chemical dyes, plants create unique results on every head of hair. Plant dyes also need time to naturally oxidize. Your color will look lighter right after rinsing, but will deepen and settle into its final, opaque shade over the next 48 hours. We always recommend waiting a few days before deciding if any adjustments are needed.
Can I get black herbal hair color with henna?
Yes! While henna is naturally red-orange, applying an indigo treatment over a henna base allows us to achieve gorgeous black and deep brunette results. Because gray and white hair can be resistant, achieving these darker shades requires a specialized two-step process to ensure complete coverage. For our local Austin-area clients, we offer a popular Quick 2-Step service to pre-pigment and dye your hair seamlessly. New clients require a virtual consultation before booking this transformative color service.
What colors can I get with plant-based hair dye?
Your botanical color options are determined by your current base shade! Besides BotaniHue pre-mixed blends, we offer tailored custom recipes to achieve a color that offers the best, most natural blend with your existing color. Because herbal hair dyes are 100% natural, they cannot lift or lighten your hair. Those with lighter hair or grays have the most flexibility, while natural redheads can achieve stunning color and gray coverage. If your hair is dark brown or black, you can add richness, depth, and shine, but you cannot go lighter!
Where are your botanical ingredients sourced?
At BotaniHue, quality and purity are our top priorities. We source all of our herbal powders directly from the manufacturers in the countries where the plants naturally thrive, such as India and Pakistan.
Can I chemically treat or color my hair after using herbal dye?
There is not a contraindication to applying chemical hair dye, bleach, or other chemical treatments over hair previously dyed with herbal color. If you decide to transition back to traditional salon chemicals, keep these two things in mind:
-
It is safe: Unlike metallic salts found in low-quality henna box dyes, pure herbal color will not react negatively with salon chemicals.
-
Lightening is difficult: Because henna and deep botanical shades bond directly to your hair's keratin protein, lifting or lightening the hair later will be more challenging.
Is it possible to remove henna hair dye?
Once applied, henna cannot be entirely removed, but it can be lightened with hair lighteners. Here is what you need to know about transitioning away from herbal color:
-
The Protein Bond: Henna binds directly to your hair's natural proteins, making it a permanent stain that only fades gradually over time.
-
Using Chemical Dyes: You can safely color over henna with chemical dyes, but lifting or lightening the hair is much more difficult.
-
Bleaching Henna: Adding subtle highlights with bleach should not pose a huge problem, however, bleach is very damaging and using it to force out herbal pigment requires extreme caution to avoid breakage. You can view our Youtube video to see how bleach affects hair with henna.
How frequently can I color my hair with herbs?
While you can safely apply botanical color to your roots and new growth as often as you need to cover grays and soothe the scalp, you should limit how often you pull the color through to your ends. Blends containing henna and indigo bond strongly to the hair, meaning frequent full-head applications will cause the pigment to build up and become darker over time. For henna-based formulas, we recommend refreshing your lengths only every few months. If you are using a henna-free herbal blend, however, you can safely apply it all over as often as you wish without experiencing any color build-up.
How often should I touch up my roots to keep grays blended?
You will need to touch up your roots as often as your natural hair grows out. While most of our botanical hair color provides a permanent stain on the strands it touches, it cannot change the color of the new, untreated hair growing from your scalp. It is also important to note that because our 100% natural herbal dyes soothe and nourish the scalp, many clients actually notice a healthy increase in their hair's natural growth rate!
